Frequently Asked Questions about Access to Work funding
1. How long does an Access to Work application take?
Access to Work processing times can vary depending on demand. Currently, it may take over 37 weeks for a new application to be allocated to an advisor.
At present, there is no formal fast-track process for most applications, so we strongly recommend applying as early as possible.
2. How long does a renewal take?
Renewal applications can usually be submitted up to 12 weeks before your current award ends.
In most cases, renewals are processed more quickly than new applications and typically take between 2 and 4 weeks, although timescales may vary.
3. Can I receive Access to Work support if I am self-employed?
Yes. Self-employed individuals can apply for Access to Work support, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.
Your tax affairs must be up to date, including submitting your most recent Self-Assessment tax return. If you operate through a limited company, your company accounts and CT600 filings should also be current.
Access to Work will generally expect your business to demonstrate a minimum level of income, which is currently £6,708 per year.
4. Can I apply for support for a new business that has not yet started trading?
Yes. Access to Work can provide support for new businesses that are in the process of being established.
You will usually be required to submit a detailed business plan, including financial projections and estimated turnover for the first three years of trading, to demonstrate the viability of the business.
5. What types of support can Access to Work provide?
Access to Work can fund a range of practical workplace support, including:
Support Workers (in person or virtual)
Support workers can assist with tasks that are difficult because of your disability, health condition, or neurodivergence. This may include administrative support, email and diary management, task organisation, meeting support, prioritisation, workload management, and other workplace tasks where additional support is required.
Workplace Coaching
Coaching can help you develop strategies to manage challenges related to your disability or neurodivergence, both at work and in daily life.
Assistive Technology and Equipment
Funding may be available for specialist software, AI-based tools, annual subscriptions, training, and workplace equipment. Examples include transcription software, noise-cancelling headphones, reMarkable tablets, ergonomic equipment, and standing desks.
6. How can Reinforce Potential help me with my Access to Work application?
At Reinforce Potential, we understand that navigating the Access to Work process can feel overwhelming, particularly when you are already managing the challenges associated with a disability, long-term health condition, or neurodivergence.
We offer a free 30-minute consultation to discuss your circumstances, explain the support that may be available to you, and answer any questions you may have about the Access to Work scheme.
Should you choose to work with us, we can provide specialist guidance throughout the application process. The support we offer is tailored to your individual circumstances and will be discussed in more detail during your consultation.
Our aim is to help you access the practical support you need to remain productive, independent, and successful at work.
7. What happens if I disagree with my Access to Work award?
If you believe that your award does not adequately meet your needs, you can request that Access to Work reconsider their decision.
This may be appropriate where support worker hours have been reduced, recommended support does not reflect the difficulties discussed during your assessment, funding rates are insufficient to secure appropriate support, or requested equipment and software have not been approved.
A reconsideration request should clearly explain why the award does not meet your needs and, where possible, include supporting evidence.
Reinforce Potential can provide advice and assistance with reconsideration requests, helping you present your circumstances clearly and effectively to maximise the likelihood of a successful outcome.
